Well last I gave you a little insight into me and my love for the BBQ. I shared a few of the places I have been and let you know that there would be more. Well now I want to share my experiences of BBQ in the great state of Texas. One of my old friends from High School moved to Austin to enjoy the music scene and this was my lucky break. I would go to visit him every spring to get away from the snow and enjoy the early warm weather.
I first started to explore the BBQ in Austin I started at a place called the Green mesquite. This place seems like an overgrown road side shack so why wouldnt it be good. They have indoor seating but i mean hey the weather is nice, so they have an outdoor seating area in the back with tables and benches, but enough of the decor bring on the BBQ. While this is not the greatest BBQ i have ever had this place is by far in the top 10 for flavor and let me tell you the prices really makes it a great place to eat. Can you believe a 4 meat 2 sides meal for 10.99 OMG that is amazing needles to say this place would be on my trip at least 1-2 times each visit.
Now I have been around the U.S. and have talked to many people at Rib fests and other BBQ fests and someone told me about a place in Lockhart, TX. Well the next trip I made to Austin I indeed researched and found that this place was about half way from Austin to San Antonio. So of course I made the trip how could I pass this up. I drove into town and saw signs for Kreuz which seemed to overpower the road way but I stayed the course and made my way to Black's BBQ this place has been owned by the same family since 1932.
Once again when I rolled up it looked like a lil ole run down shack so I knew it was gonna be good. I walked in and was a little taken back by how small it was and that it was like a cafeteria style place. I was not used to this type of place but hey the smells were great. I gingerly made my way to the front while reviewing the menu. I got to the front and decieded to take the shotgun approach and ordered a half pound of brisket, a slab of ribs, 2 hot links, quarter chicken and pork loin now the food is served on butcher paper and there is absolutely no BBQ sauce on the meats but at the end of the counter there is a crock pot for you to help yourself to the sauce. I placed a little into some serving cups so i could use it sparingly. I first tried all the meats without any sauce and OMG this is the greatest Brisket I have ever had. I then sampled the rest with sauce and the sauce was nice is only lightly applied since the meat was so delicious.
Next, I went to the other place in town and it was a decent place but it didnt compare in my opinion, however since your already in town its best to stop and try for yourself. Well I hope todays installment was informative and made your mouth water just a little, if so go ahead drive out and get you some BBQ tonight. Next time I will continue my experiences in Texas to include Beef ribs and some southwestern BBQ.

On my many trips to Austin I would stop in the Dallas area and have the one thing that Dallas is know for BEEF!
Now for those that are not familiar with Beef ribs they are just HUGE and usually slathered in a warm sticky goo of BBQ sauce. This is usually very sweet and delicious. This is such a different treat for the Avid BBQ lover, cause while Pork is delicious lets not forget about the wonder of BEEF. I have made many trips to Dallas and they are the best Beef Ribs I have ever had. Now they also Have Brisket which all of the different places I have had were good but nothing compares to the previous mentioned Black's.
I would recommend if your in Dallas to try the Beef ribs and of course (a bit off topic) get the steaks.
More BBQ will be discussed next time, I will cover the wonder of Kansas city BBQ.
